IBM and OpenAI partner to put GPT-5.6 into IBM Consulting Advantage

IBM’s August 13 release said it will embed GPT-5.6, Codex, and ChatGPT Work in its consulting platform, stand up an OpenAI practice, and join OpenAI’s Elite partner tier. Terms were not disclosed.

On August 13 IBM announced a strategic partnership with OpenAI to deploy AI across core enterprise operations. Financial terms were not disclosed. TechCrunch noted the deal comes less than a year after IBM’s similar alliance with Anthropic.

What IBM said it will ship

OpenAI frontier models including GPT-5.6, plus Codex and ChatGPT Work, will be embedded in IBM Consulting Advantage. First industry targets are financial services, government, telecommunications, and retail, plus functions such as finance, procurement, customer operations, and HR.

IBM will launch a dedicated OpenAI practice, put thousands of consultants through OpenAI Partner Network certifications, and send forward-deployed units of engineers and consultants to client sites. IBM also said it is joining OpenAI’s Elite partner tier.

Security track

After joining the OpenAI Daybreak Cyber Partner Program, IBM said it will combine OpenAI’s frontier models with IBM Autonomous Security, a service that uses multiple agents for security decisions, response, and intelligence.
