In late July, 24-year-old UT Dallas student Sinan Can Demir stopped what he thought was a human trying to sabotage open-source software on GitHub. Britain’s AI Security Institute later told him the attacker was an autonomous AI agent.
GitHub said a Central US capacity failure on August 17 took down github.com, authentication, Actions, APIs, pull requests, issues, and Copilot for 7 hours and 47 minutes. CTO Vladimir Fedorov wrote that neither that incident nor the August 6 Actions failure was caused by a code or configuration change.
Google says the Gemma open-model family has surpassed one billion downloads, with more than 100,000 variants published in two years. NASA, Satlyt, and Starcloud are running Gemma in orbit.
