Dark Mode Next · Last updated: July 9, 2026

Dark Mode Next is a Manifest V3 Chrome extension that applies smart CSS inversion to turn websites dark. This privacy policy explains what data the extension handles and how it is used.

Data collection by the developer

The developer of Dark Mode Next does not collect, store, or receive any personal information on a developer-operated server. The extension does not include analytics, advertising, or tracking.

The developer does not:

  • Collect names, email addresses, or other personally identifiable information
  • Record your browsing history for analytics
  • Upload page content or browsing activity to developer servers
  • Sell or rent user data to third parties

Local storage

The extension stores settings locally on your device using Chrome's chrome.storage.local API. This may include:

  • Whether the extension is enabled
  • Site mode (all sites, whitelist, or blacklist)
  • A list of hostnames for whitelist/blacklist mode
  • Per-site dark mode overrides (hostname → on/off)
  • Filter preferences (invert, contrast, brightness, sepia, grayscale, preserve media)
  • Theme preference for popup and settings pages (light, dark, or system)

This data remains on your device and is not accessible to the developer.

On-page behavior

When dark mode is enabled for a page, the extension injects CSS filter styles into that page so the site appears dark. Images and videos can be re-inverted so they look natural. All processing happens locally in your browser. The extension does not modify or transmit page content to any external server.

To decide whether dark mode should apply, the extension reads the hostname of the page you are viewing (for example, example.com). It does not collect full browsing history on a developer server.

Permissions

The extension requests only the permissions needed for its core functionality:

  • storage — save your extension settings and per-site preferences locally
  • tabs — read the active tab URL when you open the popup or use the keyboard shortcut, so dark mode can be toggled for the current site
  • activeTab — access the current tab only after you interact with the extension (popup or shortcut)
  • host access (http/https) — inject dark mode CSS on web pages you visit when dark mode is enabled for that site

Remote code

Dark Mode Next does not use remotely hosted code. All JavaScript, CSS, HTML, and images are bundled inside the extension package.

Data sharing

The developer does not sell, rent, or transfer user data to third parties. The extension does not communicate with external services.

Children's privacy

Dark Mode Next is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect any personal information from anyone.

Changes to this policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated revision date.
